School is out for the summer across the United States and families and individuals have already begun a busy travel season. In Alabama, the most popular airport is the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport which sees nearly three million people go through it each year and has 130 daily connections to 48 cities. But where are these people all traveling to?
Top 3 Cities To Visit for Alabama Residents
With vacation season in full swing, BetAlabama broke from Alabama sports betting updates to see where residents of the state wanted to travel the most.
To find this out, we utilized Google Trends to determine the most searched cities of the state by using the term ‘Flights To’ and finding the most often searched cities at the end of the phrase. Looking at the results over the past 12 months brought up a list of cities, with three, in particular, standing out at the top.
Alabama Doesn't Shy Away From Heat
Looking at the results it became clear that Alabamans prefer to stay close to home when traveling, as all three cities topping the list are very close by. All of the cities have plenty of options for visitors, making them perfect for quick weekend trips or more long-term vacations.
The most searched up city was Atlanta, GA. Flying to Atlanta from Birmingham only takes an hour, making it a quick easy trip and the trip can also be taken by vehicle for those not wanting to pay the usual $300 flight price. Atlanta’s Hartsfield Jackson International Airport is one of the largest in the world, so many travelers may simply be using the city as a quick stop on their way out of the south, and perhaps even out of the country. For those staying in Atlanta, there are tons of things to do including watching live sporting events as Atlanta is home to the Falcons of the NFL, the Hawks of the NBA and the Braves of MLB.
Nashville is also a popular destination, coming in at second on the list. The city has become more and more popular every year and not just for travelers as several people are choosing to make Nashville home. The entertainment district is rivaled by only Las Vegas and many people even consider Nashville’s nightlife to be superior. Unofficially, Nashville has also overtaken Vegas as the bachelorette party capital of the country so several groups will be making the quick flight over for the weekend.
Finally, Orlando checks in third on the list. Orlando is a popular vacation spot for almost every state with Disneyworld and Universal’s Island of Adventure. Again, the flights to Orlando are very quick from Alabama making it a quick and easy trip for those choosing to make the journey.
Surely some further destinations also pop up on the list, but it is apparent that residents of Alabama enjoy where they live and have no need to travel far and wide when looking for a break from home. With so many great options close by, who can blame them?
